What Kind of Treats Should You Give Your Dog?

When you train your dog to do tricks, you often rely on dog treats that can reward them for their great behavior. Moreover, sometimes you just want to give your dog a treat because they look so adorable, or just because. Regardless of your reasons for giving your dog a treat, you should know that giving them the right organic dog treats are important to their regular diet. In other words, if you are feeding your dog a healthy diet, but giving him or her treats that are made with sugars and other nasty ingredients, your treats may be doing more harm than good.

What to look for in dog Treats

First, what is the one thing that your dog loves more than anything? If you answered meat, you would be right. Dogs love and need meat in their diet, if you think your dog likes rice, try placing a bowl of rice next to a bowl of chicken, which one do you think your dog will devour? Dogs adore meat, so the best dog treats you can give your dog is a freeze-dried meat product such as beef livers, chicken breasts, salmon, turkey, and many others. When they are in the freeze-dried form, they do not smell bad to you, the owner, but smell irritable to your dog.

Keep in mind, table scraps are not great treats for your dog because they can cause unneeded calories, which can lead to obesity and other health problems. You can also choose crunchy treats that are meat-based, such as those that contain chicken and rice or fish and potato. The main point to remember when choosing your dog’s treat is to make sure they are meat-based, because if you are using them for training, dogs will do anything to get that treat out of your hand and into their stomach!

Make sure you read the labels very carefully on all natural dog treats, if you see that they contain corn, wheat, and sugar with little to no meat, you probably will want to avoid these since dogs never need sugar in their diet and many have a difficult time digesting grains such as corn and wheat. Moreover, many times the treats you give your dog if it has these ingredients can actually cause allergic reactions and cause the dog to begin scratching and can even result in ear infections. When it comes to what you feed your dog with their daily food and treats, make sure you begin to be a label-reader, which is the only way you can ensure that your dog is getting the best treats that he or she will work hard to get.

Finally, you can decide on a couple of different dog treats, such as rawhide chews or bully sticks, and alternate them so that your dog has a good variety of proteins, which helps to keep them from becoming allergic to something that they are exposed to everyday. This is why it is a good idea to rotate your dog’s daily kibble so that they can gain nutrients from other meats and grains, which keeps them healthier overall.
